LISTEN: Johnny Flynn & Robert Macfarlane – The Sun also Rises

by Chris

Hailing originally from Johannesburg, South Africa, Johnny Flynn’s musical journey unfolds with a rich tapestry of influences. Born into a family of artists, including British actor and singer Eric Flynn, Flynn’s lineage traverses the realms of both acting and music. Relocating to the UK at the age of two, Flynn’s early years were marked by a music scholarship at Pilgrims School in Winchester, where he immersed himself in the chapel choir and mastered the violin and trumpet. As a self-taught guitarist, Flynn’s journey continued with a second music scholarship to Bedales School in Hampshire before delving into acting at the Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art.

With a solid discography which serves as a captivating journey through the many nuances of the folk genre, Flynn has become a respected interpreter of traditional folk music, drawing inspirations from the early Folk Revival. He emerged unto the scene in 2008 with his debut album, “A Larum“, but it is safe to say his repertoire has grown a good bit since then. In 2010 he released “Been Listening,” featuring collaborations with Laura Marling and Anna Calvi, followed by the album “Country Mile” in 2013 and “Sillion” in 2017.

In 2021, Flynn unveiled “Lost in the Cedar Wood,” a collaborative venture with nature writer Robert Macfarlane. Inspired by the ancient Mesopotamian poem, the Epic of Gilgamesh. Which transitions us nicely into Flynn’s most recent offering, “The Moon Also Rises“. Joined by Macfarlane once more, the result is an album born from the collaborative walks of Johnny and Robert, combining together poetry, story, and nature. The tracks, shaped during strolls over the South Downs and along the River Lea, are a poignant mix of odes to the natural world, contrasted by reflections upon topical matters such as climate change, pandemics and AI. We’re excited to be able to share the track “The Sun also Rises” from the album with you all.
