LISTEN: The Furrow Collective – The Moon Shined on My Bed Last Night

by Chris

Dive into the enchanting world of The Furrow Collective, a distinguished English/Scottish quartet that weaves together traditional song and balladry from the heartlands of England, Scotland, and beyond. Formed in 2013, the band is a harmonious convergence of Lucy Farrell (viola, voice & saw), Rachel Newton (harp, fiddle, voice), Emily Portman (banjo, concertina, voice), and Alasdair Roberts (guitars, voice).

Their latest album “We Know By The Moon“, recorded with longtime collaborator and producer Andy Bell, takes the listener on a journey through moonlit stories; from the homesick Gaelic lament of an Isle of Lewis emigrant to Robert Burns’ haunting “O, Wert Thou in the Cauld Blast.” The album features captivating illustrations by May Farrell (Lucy’s mum) accompanying each individual track.

Though it is hard to pick a favourite from such an eclectic mix of tunes, the track “The Moon Shined on My Bed Last Night” felt like an embodiment of the album as a whole, and we’re happy to present you all with this beautiful lamentation of separated lovers, first recorded by the late, great Scottish folk-singer Jeannie Robertson in 1953. It has since been performed by the likes of Sam Lee and Hannah Rarity, and now we get to enjoy Furrow Collective’s rendition, which is nothing less than spellbinding.
